What I’ve Been Up To ~ Winter/Spring 2018

Hello and hi! I have been so super busy with school.  I know I always say that but the semester is coming to an end, and I’m internally crying over the amount of work I have to do and catch up on. On the bright side (literally), mother nature decided to skip spring weather and bring on summer temperatures of 85 degrees this week – but I’m not complaining.

School wise I am loving most of my classes, especially literary theory. My professor is the most brilliant and eccentric person I have ever had as a teaching figure. He turns such an presupposed boring topic into the center of our average lives. If you love psychoanalysis and thought provoking concepts and ideas, I would suggest reading Poe’s Fall of the House of Usher and Henry Jame’s Turn of the Screw. If anyone has read them I would love to have a discussion about either.

For easter break I took a long weekend trip with my boyfriend to my grandmother’s condo in Florida. I used to go down every year, but I stopped about six years ago. It brought back a lot of my favorite childhood memories, if not the best. We basically relaxed on the beach right outside the condo and ate at some good restaurants. The only annoying thing was my professors decided to make all my mid-semester papers due during break, so I was non-stop working but at least I did it in the sun.

Here is one of my favorite an effortless outfits during my trip. It’s perfect for spring. This is a super soft dark grey romper I found on sale at Urban Outfitters for only $15!!!! I paired it with some patent leather mules from Madden Girl and threw on some thick Valentino sunnies and called it a day. My favorite part of this romper, though it is not shown, it the entire back is open in a V shape. Btw, the Henri Bendel bag has a candle in it, and let me just say this is the best smelling candle with great burn time I have ever experienced. The scent is cashmere and it is better than my previous cashmere scented candles by a long shot.

Trying to post like Amina Blue but she works it way better

Pupdate: My two doggos are the best. That’s really all I can say. I did a post about how your dog is your best friend, and I cannot stress that enough. I saw this meme online that basically said that you can see all your impurities and imperfections, but your furry friend sees absolutely no flaws about your appearance, personality, or any self-diminishing thoughts. Here’s one of the memes.

Lastly, I would like to mention I am doing a new bit on the blog about my health and fitness journey. I’m unsure about the medium, whether it’ll be just writing with images or a video style or a mix of both. I would just briefly mention that I am doing this all on my own. I am not out of shape or trying to lose weight. I just want to feel healthy and strong. I have always been physically active between running, kickboxing, and weight training, but I was not consistent over the years nor was my eating habits the best.

That is just a quick update. I still have plenty of more to catch up on, but over the summer I will most definitely place my utmost attention and efforts into my blog because I really do love writing and reflecting on my personal life – even if no one reads it.

So goodbye for now and here’s just a few questions to conclude this post.

How is your semester or work going so far?

What are your favorite spring outfits?

Back to Florida

Spring break is finally here!!!

I have been super busy with school, so I couldn’t blog as much as I would like to. Being an English major requires a lot of reading and a lot of writing, which occupies most of my time when I’m not in school or working.

I finally got somewhat of a break from the crappy weather in New York and took a quick trip to my grandmother’s condo in Deerfield Beach, FL. Every year for as long as I could remember, up until I was about 12, I spent Easter there. Her condo is right on the beach and it was the perfect time of the year to lay in the sun all day and have a nice dinner outside at night. Also, I got to visit my cousin, who I wish I could see more often.

This year I took my boyfriend Dylan along because we both were in need for some relaxation. Unfortunately, I had a ton of work to do for school – one research paper, two reading assignments, and a midterm – but at least I got to do it while getting my tan on.

What did you guys do for spring break?

Travel Bucket List

My mom and my brother have gone once before and it has always been a dream of mine – the floating market in Bangkok, Buddhist temples, the food! I mean c’mon.

Where Hinduism originated. I have always been fascinated by deities of different cultures, but the Hindi goddesses struck me as the most beautiful and meaningful. I even have a tattoo of Saraswati, a major goddess representing art, music, knowledge, and learning (love her!).

Oh Ireland. The view from famous cliffs, renowned castles, sky scraping towers! I can only dream. Not to mention I am part Irish, though my looks say otherwise. My first name is Kaitlyn which is the American version of a Gaelic name; and my last name is McGuire, which translates from its Gaelic form to “son of the dun”.

Salem, Massachusetts

Where the infamous witch hunts of 1692 happened plus it’s not that far from me in New York. I recently became interested in reading about witchcraft and Wicca and how many people still practice it today. It has horrible misconceptions that it’s evil or related to the devil, but there is no such thing as Satan in Wiccan religion. The devil is a western evil, whereas witchcraft started in the eastern countries, like England. It’s just so fascinating learning about other practices and beliefs; it also came in handy in my British Literature class.

Again, I love reading about mythology, fairytales, and folklore so Germany is the place to go. One of my classes focused on the true meanings behind many well known fairy tales, like Snow White or Little Red Riding Hood. It all started by the two Grimm brothers writing these stories for an adult audience. There is a tour route of over 370 miles going through the dainty towns related to fairy tales and the Grimm brothers. Also the food and beer, duh.

There are so many other places I would like to travel to, but these are on the top of my list. What’s on your travel bucket list?

Engagement Party + OOTN

Love is in the air.

A very close friend, who is basically family, and his now fiancé held their engagement party at the Carlyle Hotel in Upper East Manhattan. The hotel itself is gorgeous and had a 1940s glam feeling. It felt like I was in an episode of Gossip Girl for the night.

Here, I am pictured with Geoff (left) and Matt (right). The lovely couple met at a social event last January and it’s been love ever since.

I am aware that gay marriage is not fully accepted in many parts of the world, but I find that love is love. Period.

Please do not leave hateful commentary for this is just my opinion.

As for my outfit, I chose to wear a sleek tux-like jacket as a dress with shorts underneath (so there’s no wardrobe malfunctions). I paired it with sheer black polka-dot tights for a more playful look. For the shoes I chose a chunky pair of black sandals because I love the socks with heels look.

Weekend Getaway + Tips on Saving Money on Vacation

This winter has been rough with the below freezing temperatures. My friend and I thought it would be a good idea to relax somewhere warm for the weekend. We booked a flight to Fort Lauderdale, FL and stayed at her family’s condo in Hollywood.

Tip #1 Constantly check different airline prices and times. If its worth sacrificing one day for a drastic price change, then make the most of your trip.

Unfortunately, we lost one day from four hours of plane delays due to bad weather. We made sure we got the whole day’s worth the following day, so we woke up extra early to go to the beach.

Tip #2 You don’t always need to do expensive activities. Going to the beach is free; you can go for a swim; and work on your tan (but don’t forget your sunscreen). If you’re planning on going to a city, then explore it. Look for cute cafes, funky music shops, or historic landmarks.

As for my outfit, I wore an old checkered shirt my sister gave me and turned it into a crop-top/coverup. I paired it with some mid-waisted cutoffs and my Valentino sunglasses.

The following day was a bit too cold for the beach, so we explored the town. We got some lunch at a cute tiki spot then took a stroll until it was time to go to my cousin’s for dinner and some catching up.

Tip #3 Going out to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner adds up. My friend and I decided to buy a carton of eggs, bagels, and fruit for breakfast or snacks. Plan and time your meals to avoid spending too much on food.

The following day, we had a good breakfast and packed up. Even though it was a short trip, it was nice to get away from the cold for a bit.

Tip #4 Stick to a budget using only cash. We all know the dread of paying credit card bills. Using physical money visually helps tracking how much you spend.

I hope you guys will have an amazing weekend and thanks for reading!

New Year’s Resolutions

I never really make new year’s resolutions, but perhaps this year’s clean slate will be different.

1. Blog More

I’ve had my blog for about five months and I’m on and off with it. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to blog about when I first created it. I want to do more travel blogs, especially since I live in NYC. I want to share my experiences so others who want to visit NYC know some good recommendation.

2. Exercise More & Eat Healthy

Ironically, when I was busier I was working out more and eating better. I was going to school every day, going to work four to five days per week, going to the gym, and run a few mornings before school. I find that the busier you are, the more motivated you are to fit something in your schedule. During this time, I looked and felt my best. I had so much energy throughout the whole day, and I really want to try to get it back.

3. Manage Schoolwork Time

I always put school first and I do pretty well; however, I always have been a last-minute person, specifically with school work. I am an English major, so I have more papers due than tests. This is both a good thing and a bad thing. I am a better writer than test-taker, but the amount of time until its due flies right by me. This past semester I let that happen and had two papers due one day, one the next day, and one the following day. It was extremely overwhelming, so I am trying to use my planner and phone reminders more often.

That is all for my resolutions. I personally think having too many is hard to handle and places more work on myself, but it really depends on the person.

Let me know what your resolutions are. Thank you for reading!

New Year’s Eve Makeup Look

I am not a makeup artist or guru or anything crazy involved in makeup. This is just to show you what products I use and their results. Let me know any thoughts or criticisms for I am still trying to learn new makeup techniques.

I don’t wear eyeshadow on a daily basis. When I do, Too Face’s Chocolate Bar Palette is really all I ever use. I am very simple when it comes to blending colors so I took Milk Chocolate and put it in my crease. Since it was New Year’s Eve, I decided to go for glitter, so I used Marzipan for the lid and extended it to the inner corners. I extended it even more to about a quarter of my lower lash line. Next, I used Semi-Sweet for the outer corner, and lastly I used Haute Chocolate to complete the lower lash line.

That is all for shadow. I then did a simple eyeliner wing, put on some mascara and lower waterline eyeliner, and filled in my brows with a pencil and some tinted brow gel.

I am so lazy when it comes to my face. Basically, I apply one thing on then blend it with a beauty blender, then apply the next product and use the same beauty blender. Before so, I spray Mario Badescu’s Facial Rose Water Facial Spray on my face and on the beauty blender. So in order I used Lancome Teint Miracle Foundation , which is my all time fave. A little goes a long way with this stuff.

My next fave is the Frank Body Lip & Cheek Tint in Cherry Bomb; I use this in replace of blush because it’s cream-based. I have very dry skin, if you didn’t read my Winter Skincare post, so I try to use cream-based or hydrating products like the Milk Makeup Highlighter. I carry this highlighter with me at all times. Its hydrating formula contains mango butter, coconut oil, and avocado oil. It doesn’t clog my pores and it blends easily. For extra New Year’s glam I lightly dust Tarte’s Tartiest PRO glow to go highlighter over the Milk one and just a little bronzer for some added glow.

My favorite part of this whole look is the lips. My new thing is nude or pinkish-nude lipliners with lipgloss. It makes your lips look plump and full. Here, I used NYX Suede Matte Lip Liner in Cannes, which is a beautiful ashy pink, and a Buxom Full-On Lip Cream in White Russian. DSCN4143

Please ket me know what you think about this look. Share any makeup posts in the comments and I’ll be glad to take a look!

Winter Skincare Routine

This winter so far has been extremely cold, so my dry skin is not loving this weather. As I am writing, it is 19 degrees Fahrenheit here in New York and blizzarding outside. I have had eczema my whole life and as I got older it spread from just my inner legs and elbows to almost my whole body and face. I suffered from inflamed acne like most teens all throughout high school and my first year of college. Each year the dry parts of my face kept getting drier and the oily parts kept getting oilier. I experimented with numerous moisturizers, face masks, toners, exfoliants, etc.

I finally went to the dermatologist, which was a mistake not to go in the first place. She gave me sample acne creams that worked for a couple of weeks. I also got prescribed cream for my facial eczema, which worked wonders. I am not all for prescriptions, but this one really helps a lot. Lastly, my derm told me to stop using whatever I was putting on my face and stick to something mild like Cetaphil.

My skin transformed immediately. I get the occasional pimple here and there, however, I had plenty of scarring all over my cheeks and forehead. I used Vitamin E oil every other day and the scarring gradually just vanished. I applied it every morning and night every day for about two months until they were completely gone. Now I use a small amount every night for moisture and radiance.

I used to wash my face two to three times a day, but that was drying my skin out way too much. I now wash my face every night with coconut oil (not shown because I ran out) because it is hydrating and contains some anti-bacterial properties. If i have a lot of makeup on I massage the oil into my skin and wipe it off with a damp towel and continue the process until my face is completely clean. I use Kiehl’s Ultra Moisturizing Cream in the morning and night. Twice a week I use an actual cleanser, mostly the Cetaphil Body and Face Cleanser, for an extra clean. Once a week, I use the Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Mask by Bliss, and about everyday I spritz the Mario Badescu Facial Spray for a little pick-me-up. Every single day, I use the Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream after I shower. This cream is unscented and extremely hydrating; I highly recommend it for anyone who has eczema because may body creams are scented and irritating. Some days I will use it on my face since it has a non-oily formula.

I received the Marcelle 3-in-1 LumiPOWER Moisturizer in a Birchbox, which I use as an eye cream everyday. I am very satisfied with the results, so I am going to purchase the full bottle once the sample runs out. I keep the Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula by my bed for when I notice any dry spots, mostly on my hands. I keep the L’occitane Shea Butter Hand Creamwith me when I am on the go plus it smells amazing. Lastly, my lip must be moisturized at all times. I use this Kiehl’s Lip Balm most of the time and it has a glossy formula, so it completes my everyday makeup look.

I do not fully recommend every product because everyone has different skin types. This is what works for my skin, and this post is to just share what products I like. Thank you for visiting!

What products are you using this winter?

Family Time

Hello all. I hope everyone is well. My cousins and her parents came to New York for a quick holiday weekend. Unfortunately I was not able to see them that much because I was busy with finals, but most of the McGuires gathered in the city for some classic Italian dinner and a quick pic with the famous NYC Christmas tree.

The McGuire family and some photo- bombers in the far back lol

I have not seen cousins in a few years, and it makes me sad that I cannot spend more time with them since I am not very close with the other side of my family. Everyone’s family works differently but I am grateful for all that I have.

In case you guys were wondering about my outfit… I always go for all black attire with something that stands out. Here, it is my classic beige coat.

Anyways, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all!
